I saw 25-year-old prove he is worth paying £25m for, Nottingham Forest should bid - opinion

Nottingham Forest have been linked with Caoimhin Kelleher, and I think that the Liverpool goalkeeper’s performance at the City Ground on Saturday afternoon has shown that he is good enough to start for Nuno’s side week in and week out next season.

The Daily Mail reported this week that if Forest stay in the Premier League for next season, then they will try to sign Caoimhin Kelleher in the summer transfer window.

Nottingham Forest want to sign Caoimhin Kelleher

The report claimed that Liverpool, who have won the Carabao Cup already this season and are also aiming to clinch the Premier League, the UEFA Europa League and the FA Cup, want £25 million for Kelleher, who was described as a “world-class” goalkeeper by his teammate Virgil van Dijk after his heroics against Chelsea last weekend.

Forest tried to sign Kelleher in the summer of 2023 as well. They bid £15 million for the 25-year-old goalkeeper. Liverpool turned it down. The City Ground outfit subsequently signed Matz Sels.

On Saturday afternoon, Kelleher lined up for Liverpool against Forest at the City Ground. And I was immensely impressed with his performance in the Premier League game.

Caoimhin Kelleher impresses for Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest

Kelleher, who is playing for Liverpool now only because of an injury to Alisson, was superb in goal and was one of the main reasons why Jurgen Klopp’s side did not concede.

The Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper made a brilliant save in the first half to keep out Anthony Elanga.

Kelleher was not often called upon thereafter, but when he had to make a save, he did so comfortably and without any fuss.

The Liverpool goalkeeper was also very good with his feet and kept a low show to his right, down at the near post.

Now, Matz Sels is the first-choice goalkeeper at Forest, and he arrived at the City Ground only in the January transfer window.

The former Newcastle United goalkeeper has done well for Nuno’s side, but he is 32 now. And, that Forest signed him after bidding for Kelleher shows that the Belgium international was never their first option.

So, for next season, Forest could make Kelleher their number one goalkeeper and Sels could become his back-up. As forMatt Turner, the error-prone USA international could just be offloaded for good.
