'What the game is all about': Robbie Fowler hits out at what happened to Manchester United player recently

Some may not have expected Robbie Fowler to express some sympathy for a Manchester United player after what happened to him during their incredible FA Cup tie with Liverpool last weekend.

Of course, it was a sensational game at Old Trafford. Erik ten Hag‘s side booked their place in the semi-final of the competition where they will face Coventry City for a place in the final.

Liverpool had the ties in their hands on a couple of occasions. They led late on in the 90 minutes. And they went in front again in extra-time. However, United were able to fight back.

And it was Amad Diallo who scored the winner. Amad ran through with Alejandro Garnacho as the home side launched a counter attack, and the forward was able to tuck the ball past Caoimhin Kelleher to send the ground into a frenzy.

However, it would prove to be Amad’s final kick of the game.

The 21-year-old had been booked shortly before the winner. And after finding the back of the net, he removed his shirt in the celebrations.

Unsurprisingly, the referee was not able to let the youngster off. And with that, Robbie Fowler has hit out at the decision to send Amad off, insisting to the Sunday Mirror (24/3; page 68) that the law needs changing.

“Seeing Manchester United’s Amad Diallo sent off after he had scored the last-minute winner to knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup last week was yet another example of how detached the custodians of football are from the game they are supposed to protect,” he said.

“Our beautiful game is fuelled by emotion. If you want proof, listen to Diallo’s interview after he had scored the biggest goal of his life and then picked up a second yellow card for holding his United shirt up in front of the Stretford End to celebrate.

“He was so caught up in the moment he completely forgot that he had been booked a few minutes earlier.

“That’s what the game is all about. Or it should be.

“Unfortunately, referee John Brooks had to inflict the letter of the law on the 21-year-old because he’d have been in trouble if he hadn’t done his duty.”

Youngster may not care too much about red card with place in folklore secured

It does seem to be a strange law. But unfortunately, the moments of genuine joy are becoming rarer in the game at the very highest level.

That is largely due to VAR, which has a tendency to ruin some of the best moments right now. But it was also a shame to see Amad sent off.

Having said that, he should have been able to remember that he was on a yellow card. Thankfully for United, losing a player for those final moments did not cost them. And Amad will always be able to enjoy being so closely associated with that remarkable victory.
