‘People don’t realise’: Ledley King says player Tottenham sold for £15m was so underrated

Ledley King played with some absolutely amazing players during his time at Tottenham.

King was lucky enough to call the likes of Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Rafael Van der Vaart his teammates during his career.

Speaking on Five, King has been asked to name the best player he ever played with at Spurs, and while the usual suspects all got a mention, King also gave a shoutout to another underappreciated player.

Ledley King says Michael Carrick was very underrated

King was speaking about the best players he played with when he touched on Michael Carrick.

The defender says that people don’t realise just how good Carrick was as a player, claiming that he was an incredibly balanced footballer who was at the top level.

“It’s like Carrick right? People don’t realise how good he was, he was balanced. I love balanced players, I love that type of player. I spent 18 months with him and he was a top top player as well,” King said.

Michael Carrick wasn’t exciting

King is right, Carrick probably didn’t get the credit he deserved for his ability, but that’s because he wasn’t all that exciting as a footballer.

As King says, he was a very balanced player, he was quite good at everything he did while not being excellent at any particular aspect of the game.

Carrick never really stood out for this reason. He’d keep your team ticking over and he wouldn’t make many mistakes, but if you wanted something special, he wasn’t the man you were ever going to turn towards.

Carrick would, of course, leave Tottenham for Manchester United in a £15m before going on to win everything there was to win at Old Trafford, and while his trophy haul was very impressive, the midfielder isn’t considered one of the best of his generation.
