Manchester United now reportedly want 'brilliant' boss Gary Neville deemed his 'manager of the season' last year

Manchester United are reportedly keeping tabs on a number of managers and coaches ahead of what could be a crucial summer for the club.

Although Man United are still in with a shout of a top-five spot, the team has been sub-par far too often this season.

And with Sir Jim Ratcliffe‘s INEOS group now in charge of football operations at Man United, there could well be changes in the summer.

One recent report from ESPN has claimed that the Red Devils have set their sights on one of the Premier League’s best up-and-coming managers.

Manchester United are looking to get in contact with Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O’Neil, according to the report.

In addition, the 40-year-old has apparently been made aware of the Red Devils’ interest in his services.

The report doesn’t specify whether Man United want O’Neil as their new manager, with the Red Devils seemingly looking to bolster their entire coaching setup.

Man United have also assessed Gareth Southgate, Roberto De Zerbi and Thomas Frank as potential successors to Erik ten Hag, according to the report.

It’s not surprising to hear that the Red Devils are apparently planning to get in touch with O’Neil, who is going from strength to strength as a Premier League manager.

The ‘brilliant’ 40-year-old impressed as Bournemouth boss following Scott Parker’s exit, keeping them in the top flight against most odds.

And though O’Neil was dismissed, he then linked up with Wolves, where he is continuing to do a great job.

The Molineux outfit currently sits ninth in the Premier League table, six points behind Manchester United.

What has Gary Neville said about Manchester United target Gary O’Neil?

When O’Neil was at Bournemouth, Red Devils icon Gary Neville made a U-turn on the south coast club’s chances of survival in the top flight.

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast in April last year (16/4/23, 30:15) he said: “If [O’Neil] keeps Bournemouth up he’s my manager of the season.

“Everybody who I spoke to two weeks ago going into the international break had Bournemouth and Southampton going down.”

Neville continued: “I had [Nottingham] Forest, Southampton and Bournemouth as my three [to go down] a few weeks ago.

“I think that Bournemouth now will pull out of that unless something completely about-turns, and I think you’re starting to look at Everton, Leicester and Leeds with real worry.

“And they’re big clubs and a couple of them won’t like going down from a financial perspective. It’ll be painful for them and hurt badly.”
