'Mystified': Spurs chose to sign £8.5m player in 2019 instead of star with 15 PL goals this term - journalist

Journalist Alasdair Gold has admitted that he remains mystified Tottenham Hotspur did not sign one player five years ago who has now scored 15 Premier League goals this season.

Tottenham have rightly been lauded for a number of absolutely inspired deals over the last couple of years.

The likes of Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Destiny Udogie and James Maddison have been outstanding additions.

But it is certainly fair to say that Tottenham have not got everything right.

As reported by The Athletic, there was once a feeling that Jack Grealish would inevitably end up at Tottenham. But Spurs never managed to make an acceptable offer before Aston Villa were taken over.

Tottenham signed Jack Clarke over forward with 15 Premier League goals this season

And he was not the only player now shining in the Premier League Tottenham missed the chance to land on the relative cheap.

Jarrod Bowen had a key impact in denying Ange Postecoglou’s side victory at the London Stadium on Tuesday night. It was Bowen’s corner which was turned in by Kurt Zouma just before half-time in the 1-1 draw.

And speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast, Alasdair Gold suggested that, had history played out differently, Spurs may have signed Bowen in 2019.

“I’ve always liked Jarrod Bowen. I’m still mystified that Spurs didn’t go for him back in the day, 2019, signed young Jack Clarke instead. I think Jarrod Bowen is a player full of confidence, everything he does you can see he believes something’s going to come of it,” he said.

Definitely a baffling mistake

This is definitely one deal which looks like a real error of judgement from Tottenham.

By the time Jack Clarke joined Tottenham for £8.5 million, his form for Leeds had really dipped. And it has only been in the last couple of years at Sunderland that he has started to really get his career back on track. Clarke would never make a Premier League appearance for Tottenham.

Bowen would move to the Premier League a few months later, signing for West Ham from Hull for £22 million.

Since then, he has been directly involved in 99 goals in 197 games for the Hammers. And he has found the back of the net 15 times in the top-flight this season alone.

So it is no surprise that Gold cannot quite understand why Tottenham chose to pursue Clarke instead of Bowen when they had the chance.
