Lucas Bergvall says something ‘unexpected’ has happened to him at Djurgarden this season

Tottenham Hotspur will welcome Lucas Bergvall to North London this summer and it’s fair to say that fans are already pretty excited.

Tottenham landed something of a coup in January by landing Radu Dragusin from Genoa.

The defender snubbed a move to Bayern Munich in favour of joining Spurs, summing up the buzz around Ange Postecoglou’s project.

Tottenham then repeated the trick just a few weeks later by securing the signature of Bergvall.

The Djurgarden talent looked set to join Barcelona before Tottenham swooped in to hijack the deal.

Bergvall will be joining up with Tottenham at the end of the season, continuing to play for Djurgarden until the summer.

The 18-year-old is being tipped for a huge future and whilst expectations must be tempered given the jump from Swedish football to the Premier League, Spurs fans surely can’t wait to see him in action.

Djurgarden share Lucas Bergvall news

Bergvall could be part of the Tottenham midfield for years to come and his popularity in Sweden is already clear.

Djurgarden’s head of merchandise Tommie Lindberg has now told Fotbollskanalen that Bergvall has been the most popular shirt at Djurgarden over the last year.

Bergvall joined from IF Brommapojkarna – ironically, Dejan Kulusevski’s former club – in 2023 and had a stunted start to his career with the club due to injury.

It’s impressive that so many fans bought Bergvall shirts even after a frustrating start, just summing up how popular he became with the Swedes.

Bergvall was ahead of some Djurgarden ‘stalwarts’ as fans flocked to get his name on the back of their shirts over the last year.

“Lucas Bergvall is at the top when you look at sales during this year,” said Lindberg. “After him, the stalwarts Haris (Radetinac), “Mange” (Magnus Eriksson) and “Mackan” (Marcus Danielson) share second place, but now the new acquisition Tobias Gulliksen is quickly climbing and also Tokmac Nguen since two weeks ago,” said Lindberg.

Bergvall stunned

Bergvall has offered comments too, admitting that he was surprised to hear the news.

The midfielder feels that selling so many shirts was ‘actually unexpected’ and he doesn’t even understands why this situation has materialised.

Bergvall feels that his early days at Djurgarden were ‘a bit up and down’ but thinks young people may like having his name on their shirts.

“I don’t know why it’s me, there are probably many young people who buy, but I don’t know. It was actually unexpected. It really was. It was my first year in Djurgården and I didn’t play very much. It was a bit up and down and I was injured quite a bit and so on,” said Bergvall.

Bergvall is unlikely to be Tottenham’s biggest shirt seller inside a a year of his time at the club given that the likes of Son Heung-min and James Maddison are at the club.

Still, Swedes may well be tempted to purchase a Bergvall shirt if his progress and development continues.

Kulusevski will be the man for Swedish fans who want a Tottenham shirt right now, but Bergvall’s popularity may just spark a change in the near future.
