Ex-Tottenham Hotspur transfer chief could now make Newcastle United move

Tottenham Hotspur have seen some changes to the recruitment team in recent years with the club seeking consistency in the transfer market.

Tottenham currently have Johan Lange serving as technical director whilst former scout Rob Mackenzie is back at the club, following Lange from Aston Villa to Spurs.

Fabio Paratici is also still in the background, working as something of a consultant to Tottenham having been banned from being director of football.

The last couple of transfer windows have been promising with Spurs landing the likes of Radu Dragusin, Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Guglielmo Vicario.

Tottenham fans can move towards the summer transfer window with some optimism over new recruits.

That is a much more positive feeling than in years gone by, when Spurs missed opportunities to strengthen the squad, especially under Mauricio Pochettino.

Going 18 months without a signing, splashing out on the likes of Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso… Tottenham had a few too many misfires.

Paul Mitchell could make Premier League return

Some may wonder if it could have been different had Paul Mitchell stayed at the club.

Mitchell joined Tottenham as a scout in 2014, following Pochettino from Southampton to Tottenham.

The 42-year-old end up leaving in February 2017 having tendered his resignation, leaving his role and then being placed on gardening leave.

Mitchell headed on to the Red Bull group, working with RB Leipzig, New York Red Bulls and Red Bull Bragantino.

Mitchell then became Monaco’s sporting director and only left the club in October 2023, meaning he is now seeking a new opportunity ahead of the summer transfer window.

Tottenham could end up seeing Mitchell make a Premier League return with Newcastle United now looking into appointing him.

Newcastle World suggest that Mitchell is one of three final candidates for the job whilst iNews claim that he is a leading contender.

Newcastle are set to lose Dan Ashworth to Manchester United and are now targeting Mitchell as a potential replacement.

Who did Tottenham sign under Mitchell?

Tottenham’s 2015 business was hugely impressive, landing Dele from Milton Keynes Dons in the January before he joined up in the summer.

Dele may have fizzled out at Tottenham but he was outstanding upon arrival and helped drive a strong period under Pochettino.

Toby Alderweireld and Kieran Trippier also came in during the 2015 summer window and both played vital roles for Spurs after bargain transfers.

Kevin Wimmer and Clinton N’Jie made little impact but the big signing was Son Heung-min.

Son remains a Tottenham hero to this day and will go down as one of the finest signings in the club’s history.

2016 was more of a mixed bag; Victor Wanyama came in and whilst Moussa Sissoko spent five years with the club, Vincent Janssen and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou didn’t work out.

Mitchell’s work at Tottenham played into an exciting era at the club, supplying Pochettino with quality first-team players before deciding to leave Spurs.

Newcastle may now believe that Mitchell can bring similar quality to St James’ Park, and Tottenham may well have to battle Mitchell for signings in the future.
