Report: Wolves make ‘offer’ to sign ‘sensational’ summer transfer target as O’Neil seeks new faces

Wolves are beginning to turn their heads to the summer transfer window, with one Gary O’Neil target now named by reports in Portugal.

It’s poised to be a busy summer at Molineux, as Gary O’Neil bids to win the backing of Fosun and replenish his jaded squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The manager has done an impressive job at navigating around Wolves’ squad shortages throughout the 2023/24 calendar, with the financial woes of last summer evident in the Old Gold’s recent form.

Due to the need to offload star names to generate profit to meet financial boundaries, O’Neil took over a squad short on depth from Julen Lopetegui, who departed due to his concerns about the lack of quality.

The boss has defied the odds in leading the Midlands club to raise the bar however, he’s made it abundantly clear that he expects Fosun to support him in the 2024 summer transfer window, with one target now named.

Wolves eyeing 20-year-old summer target Rodrigo Gomes

According to news in Portugal, relayed by Sport Witness, Wolves have ‘made an offer’ for 20-year-old SC Braga winger, Rodrigo Gomes.

The report claims that the Premier League club have made a €5m proposal for the dynamic youngster, who is currently on loan at GD Estoril Praia.

It’s said that a representative from Wolves was at a recent fixture between Estoril and Chaves, a game in which the winger claimed his seventh assist in Liga Portugal this season.

While the 2003-born gem isn’t represented by Gestifute, whom Wolves have a strong relationship with, it’s no secret that the Old Gold have a positive history of poaching rising talent in Portugal.

Who is Wolves target Rodrigo Gomes?

It’s been a marvellous season so far for the 20-year-old, who has found sanctuary on loan at Estoril, playing in Portugal’s first tier.

In 26 league appearances, the versatile winger has scored five goals and claimed seven assists, showing his creative influence and potency in front of goal from the flank.

Earlier in the campaign, U23 scout Antonio Mango lauded the rumoured Wolves target as “sensational”, giving credit to his “incredible” impact at his loan club.

Based on his form and confidence in Portugal, Wolves could acquire a top talent in Gomes however, there will be some alarm bells ringing in O’Neil’s ears based on the recent talent from Portugal the Old Gold have signed.

Fabio Silva’s 2020 arrival has been nothing short of a disaster at Molineux, with a similar narrative surrounding Goncalo Guedes’ signing although, with a reportedly small price tag, the risk factor in poaching Gomes would be a lot lower.

A confident and direct wide player, the 20-year-old could certainly offer O’Neil depth in the wide areas, which is critical for the club to achieve in the summer.
