Barry Bannan labels Sheffield Wednesday teammate a 'big game player' after Blackburn Rovers win

One Sheffield Wednesday star has been hailed as a ‘big game player’ after a memorable win over Blackburn Rovers.

Sheffield Wednesday desperately needed three points as they travelled to Ewood Park at the weekend, with even more pressure mounting on them as their clash didn’t take place until Sunday.

The Owls pulled off a brilliant performance in front of the TV cameras though, winning 3-1 and finally climbing out of the relegation zone with just two matches to go.

The nerves were high as kick-off took place, but it only took a matter of minutes for Josh Windass to open the scoring with an ‘incredible‘ lob over the goalkeeper.

Blackburn did equalise practically straight away, but Danny Rohl’s half-time message must have worked, with Marvin Johnson taking the lead, before Aynsley Pears manage to slice the ball into his own net.

It is a vital victory for Wednesday, who put on a brilliant afternoon for the 7,321 fans who had made the trip to Lancashire.

Josh Windass is a ‘big game player’

One man in particular who has retained his title as a ‘big game player’ is Josh Windass, whose goal was his first since returning from injury.

The midfielder took to Instagram to congratulate Barry Bannan on his 400th appearance for the club, to which his teammate wrote: “Thanks brother big game player”.

A number of fans had called for Windass’ summer exit due to his injury problems this season, but he certainly proved his worth at the weekend.

The 30-year-old only completed eight passes in 79 minutes, but scored a vital goal, made one key pass and won one free-kick.

This was the third 3-1 scoreline he had netted in this term, having previously scored in the reverse fixture against Blackburn, as well as bagging the third against Hull City on New Year’s Day.

2022/23 season was one to remember for Windass

Windass scored some very memorable goals last season too, with his 123rd minute diving header at Wembley Stadium to take Wednesday back up to the Championship being one that will never be forgotten in Yorkshire.

While Windass didn’t score in their semi-final comeback, he did tuck away his penalty in the shoot-out to secure their place at the national stadium.

His brace against Newcastle United in the FA Cup in January 2023 is also one to remember, with the Owls knocking the Premier League outfit out in the third round.

Windass is undeniably the perfect player to have on the big stage and he certainly rises the occasion.

While he is raking in a lot of money at Hillsborough and has had his injury problems, having him around is clearly very valuable, and Danny Rohl is going to have to decide whether he is worth the money they pay him for these big moments.
