Paul Merson says 25-year-old Arsenal player should be up for PL's Player of the Season alongside Cole Palmer

Arsenal have got their Premier League title hopes back on track thanks to their weekend win away at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Gunners are now back at the top of the table and will be hoping to go six points clear when they host Chelsea on Tuesday night.

Victory for Arsenal would help pile the pressure on Manchester City, who will have two games in hand on Mikel Arteta’s side.

No matter what happens this season, Arsenal have continued to progress under Arteta, and the club has a bright future ahead.

One particularly game-changing acquisition came last summer, with Arsenal signing Declan Rice from West Ham United.

The Gunners reportedly spent £105million to sign the England midfielder, and he has been so good for the north Londoners that the fee seems like a bargain.

Now, Paul Merson has listed Rice among his picks for the Premier League’s player of the season.

What has Paul Merson said about Arsenal star Declan Rice?

Merson, writing on Sportskeeda, was praising Chelsea’s Cole Palmer for his efforts this season.

The Highbury icon then backed him to be in the running for Player of the Season alongside Rice and a number of other top players.

“He (Palmer) is such an intelligent footballer,” said Merson.

“And should be in contention to win the Player of the Season award alongside the likes of Declan Rice, Virgil van Dijk and Phil Foden, among others.”

There’s absolutely no doubt that Rice needs to be in the running for the Premier League’s Player of the Season.

When a player moves for big money, as was the case with Rice to Arsenal, it doesn’t take long for critics to get on his case if he doesn’t do superbly from the off.

However, not once has his price tag been mentioned amongst those who are quick to jump to criticism, while many Gunners fans actively feel they’re got themselves a bargain.
