Celebrity struggled by living in his car with no money - 'My whole existence is an accident'

John Cena was living in his car before he found fame, and he managed to do a 180 on Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events to get where he is today.

The celebrity had a tough time before he became the WWE icon who had a famous feud with The Rock in the ring. John Cena revealed before finding fame, he was living in his car struggling to make ends meet. The 47-year-old has carved out a successful career for himself, after adding movie star to his resume. But it wasn’t always that easy when he tried to get his name out there.

The TV star was sleeping in his 1991 Lincoln Continental and relying on free pizza when he moved to Hollywood.

The 47-year-old admitted his ‘whole existence is an accident’ when it came to his life now.

He moved to LA in the late 1990s, not to follow the lights of Tinsel Town that most aspiring stars do. Instead, he wanted to study fitness at college, but didn’t make the grade.

He told Kevin Hart in his Hart to Heart series: “I didn’t move out to LA to pursue entertainment.

”[I] came out here to apply my degree in exercise physiology and kinesiology and really failed. … I couldn’t get any sort of validation for that piece of paper that I paid for.”

After that failed, he tried to become a cop, taking the California Highway Patrol exam and failed that too.

He added: “Every avenue of fitness, failed. Closed door, closed door.”

But he got down on his luck and ended up having to survive on free food. He explained he would eat an entire pizza every night because a pizza parlor – next door to where he worked as a bouncer – offered a deal it would be free if you could finish it. So he did just that.

John Cena added he was also living in his car, and was grateful his Lincoln Continental was a ‘big car’ so it was roomy.

Stumbling into wrestling

Despite the rough living arrangement, he did have a home back in Massachusetts. But he wanted to prove to everyone he would make it.

During his tough spot, the Suicide Squad star enrolled in the Ultimate Pro Wrestling school, Ultimate University. Who would have known Cena would go on to join WWE in 2001 and become one of the most successful in the ring?

He went on to win more than 15 world championships and is one of the highest-paid pro wrestlers in WWE history.

“I did not know that wrestling was even a career option,” he said.

“I watched it as a young man, kind of fell out of it as an adolescent, a teenager, because it’s like, ‘Oh, you’ve gotta study hard and maybe play sports and go get a real job or whatever.’”

And he appears to have made up with Dwayne Johnson too. It’s all looking up for the star.

“I’m very fortunate for my story because it was my choice to have hard times,” he said. “My father always said, ‘You’re my son. I love you. You’re always welcome back home.’ If I could get to West Newbury, Massachusetts, I would be fed. I would have a roof over my head. I would be able to regroup.”
