Taylor Swift under microscope as fans claim new song sounds eerily similar - 'It's insane'

Olivia Rodrigo fans are taking aim at Taylor Swift under the argument that Tay’s new song ‘imgonnagetyouback’ is similar to Olivia’s ‘get him back!’

The Tortured Poets Department is being dissected and discussed by Taylor Swift fans all over social media. Much of the discourse has surrounded which song lyrics are about which ex, whether that’s English actor Joe Alwyn or The 1975 frontman Matty Healy. In an unexpected turn, fans of the 21-year-old American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo have dived in to stir up the conversation, suggesting that there are unignorable similarities between two of the artists’ respective songs…

Olivia Rodrigo fans say Taylor Swift’s ‘imgonnagetyouback’ sounds like ‘get him back!’

Taylor released an extended double-album for The Tortured Poets Department subtitled The Anthology, and on that 31-track behemoth is the eighteenth track ‘imgonnagetyouback’.

The song’s title contains a double meaning, referring to either getting back with an ex or getting them back through means of revenge.

It’s a play on words that has encouraged Olivia’s fans to argue that she did it first with the single ‘get him back!’ taken from her second album, Guts, released in 2023. Olivia’s song similarly has lyrics that contain the same double meaning.

There is already conflict between the two singers’ fandoms. After the release of Olivia’s debut album Sour, music fans noticed that Taylor was given a non-collaborative credit on the song ‘deja vu’ due to similarities between that song and Taylor’s ‘Cruel Summer’.

This has led fans to be considerably vocal in their belief that the tables have turned.

“So Olivia can’t scream in a bridge because that’s Taylor’s concept,” one fan began arguing on X/Twitter, “but Taylor can use the whole double meaning of getting them back and it’s a common concept? NEWS FLASH… They’re both common and Olivia shouldn’t have had to give up 50% royalties on ‘déjà vu’.”

‘Rift’ between Olivia and Rodrigo fans intensifies over ‘insane hypocrisy’

“Taylor Swift’s ‘imgonnagetyouback’ and Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘get him back’ sound frighteningly similar,” another argued, “but Olivia’s is much better and was first.”

Continuing the debate, one listener tweeted: ‘Taylor Swift accepting a royalty from Olivia Rodrigo for a line in ‘déjà vu’ that sounds a little ‘Cruel Summer’, when she’s just released a song called ‘imgonnagetoyouback’ which has the exact same concept and similar lyrics to Olivia’s ‘get him back’ is insane hypocrisy.”

Others have even argued that the song ‘Florida!!! (feat. Florence + The Machine)’ from The Tortured Poets Department sounds like ‘vampire’ from Olvia’s album Guts.

On the other hand, some have been quick to suggest that Olvia didn’t originate the concept explored in ‘get him back!’ tracing it to the 2005 song Get Him Back from acclaimed singer-songwriter Fiona Apple, taken from her third album Extraordinary Machine.

“‘Olivia Rodrigo invented the double meaning of get him back’ ‘no Taylor Swift.'” a Fiona fan mocked. “First of all no one did but also Fiona Apple did in 2005.”
