23-year-old West Ham loanee scores hat-trick in 4-3 come from behind win against league leaders

West Ham United loanee Andy Irving is making some serious waves out in Austria with SK Klagenfurt.

West Ham boss David Moyes signed Andy Irving from SK Austria Klagenfurton transfer deadline day in the summer of 2023, and then immediately loaned him back to the Austrian club.

The 23-year-old openly admitted just last month that it is his dream to play for the Hammers next season.

At the time, that sounded like a rather overly ambitious statement from the Scot, but his latest showing proves that he does have genuine quality.

The former Hearts man’s loan deal with the Austrian side is up at the end of the season, so what does the future really hold for him?

The central midfielder is a very tidy player and who knows, he might just have a role to play for West Ham next season now…

Andy Irving could be a West Ham master-stroke after scintillating hat-trick

The midfielder now has nine goals and five assists to his name in 27 games out in Austria so far this season (Transfermarkt).

Those numbers look even better now than they did 24 hours ago, after his heroics for SK Klagenfurt against Austrian Bundesliga giants RB Salzburg yesterday…

With his side trailing 2-0 at half-time, Irving took the bull by the horns.

The Scot scored a magnificent 22-minute hat-trick that helped his side record a memorable 4-3 win. As a result, Salzburg, the league leaders at the time of the game, slipped down into second place.

It must be said, Andy Irving still has a very long way to go if he is to prove that he’s actually good enough to play for West Ham in the Premier League.

He does have a very silky left foot, and his technique is impressive to watch. However, does he have the physical capabilities and energy levels needed to succeed in England’s top flight?

That is very much debatable.

He is clearly a very good player, but whether or not his attributes are more suited to the Austrian league rather than the Premier League remains to be seen.

That said, all we can do is give him a proper chance to show us what he’s truly capable of. And who knows, he might just end up being a master-stroke signing.
