Rohl must start 'fantastic' Sheffield Wednesday ace v West Brom amid possible injury crisis - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday host West Brom in the Championship this weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday welcome top six hopefuls West Brom in their final home game of the season this weekend.

The Owls will play in front of a sold-out Hillsborough crowd, going into this weekend in 21st place of the Championship table.

It comes after a 3-1 win over Blackburn Rovers last weekend lifted Sheffield Wednesday out of the drop zone for the first time under Danny Rohl.

West Brom meanwhile have lost their last two in the Championship but still have a three-point buffer to 7th place Hull City.

The centre-back position has been quite a contested one this season.

Wednesday have numbers at the back but at times have lacked quality, and Rohl took a while to figure out his best defensive partnership.

When playing the back-four, it seems like Michael Ihiekwe and Di’Shon Bernard are the favoured options, though both may be unavailable this weekend.

Bernard is still working his way back to fitness after missing the last six games, whilst Ihiekwe was forced off early in the game vs Blackburn.

Bambo Diaby came in for him but was soon forced off with a broken nose, with his possible inclusion this weekend up in the air.

That means defensive options are very light going into this weekend, made more difficult by the fact that Rohl has been donning a back-five of late.

A huge chance for Dominic Iorfa to shine

Dominic Iorfa, previously described as a ‘fantastic’ player by Rohl, has had a pretty stop-start season with Sheffield Wednesday.

The versatile defender was one of the first names on the team sheet when Rohl first came in, but an injury back in December would see Pol Valentin come in at right-back and prevail.

Iorfa doesn’t displace Valentin at right-back.

But with centre-backs light this weekend, it could mean a chance for Iorfa to come in and prove his class.

And he’s certainly got a lot of that; he’s been a solid option for Sheffield Wednesday during his six years at the club, though injury has really limited him in certain seasons.

But there was one performance that springs to mind with Iorfa.

He started as one of the three centre-backs in the 1-0 win vs Plymouth Argyle in March and gave arguably his best performance of the season.

The 28-year-old was up and down the pitch, complementing Valentin at right wing-back but also doing his defensive duties very well.

He came on for Diaby on Sunday and it seems likely that he’ll be given another chance this weekend, starting alongside Liam Palmer and Akin Famewo in what would be a very makeshift defence.

That’s if Ihiekwe and/or Bernard aren’t in the side.

It’d be a huge chance for Iorfa to prove his worth ahead of his contract expiry this summer.
