West Brom legend & ex-Owls coach: How Sheffield Wednesday lined up the last time they beat the Baggies

Here is what Sheffield Wednesday’s starting line-up looked like the last time they beat West Brom.

Sheffield Wednesday are preparing for yet another ‘cup final’ this weekend as they look to take one step closer to safety.

The Owls enjoyed a 3-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers last time out and finally clawed their way out of the relegation zone.

With only two games left, Wednesday could be dragged back down into the bottom three if they fail to beat West Brom this weekend.

While Danny Rohl‘s side will claim the home advantage, beating the Baggies will be a huge challenge.

Carlos Corberan’s side currently sit in fifth place and could potentially confirm their place in the play-offs with a win at Hillsborough.

While they have won only one of their previous six games in the Championship, Wednesday’s record against West Brom is not very promising.

The Yorkshire outfit have failed to beat West Brom in their last nine attempts (L6 D3), with their last victory coming at The Hawthorns in April 2007.

The Baggies were also fighting for promotion then too, while the Owls sat tenth in the league table.

IAIN TURNER joined Sheffield Wednesday on a month’s loan in 2007 and he helped them avoid defeat in each of the eleven games he played in.

The goalkeeper went onto enjoy spells with the likes of Preston, Sheffield United and Southport, before retiring in 2018. He joined Tranmere Rovers as a goalkeeper coach in 2019.

LEE BULLEN spent four years at Hillsborough and won the play-offs in 2005 with the Owls. He went onto have three spells as caretaker manager at Wednesday, before a two-year stint with Ayr United that ended in January.

FRANK SIMEK left Sheffield Wednesday for Carlisle United in 2010, before retiring three years later at only 29 years old. The former defender has since returned to the USA and resides in Illinois.

RICHARD WOOD came up through the ranks at Middlewood Road before leaving for Coventry in 2010. He spent a majority of his career with Rotherham United, but now plays for Doncaster Rovers in League Two.

TOMMY SPURR began his career at Wednesday and spent seven years there before joining Doncaster Rovers. He went onto play for Blackburn, Preston and Fleetwood, before retiring in 2019.

CHRIS BRUNT spent three years at Hillsborough, but is actually most known for his 13-year stint with West Brom, who he joined that summer. The 39-year-old retired in 2021 and is currently the Baggies’ loan player manager.

KENNY LUNT endured an underwhelming spell at Sheffield Wednesday and was released in 2009. He went onto manage Crewe Alexandra’s U18 side and enjoyed a spell as their assistant coach, while he is now the player development manager.

GLENN WHELAN has played for the likes of Stoke City, Aston Villa and most recently, Bristol Rovers. He retired from playing last summer and is now a full-time coach with The Gas.

DEON BURTON played for over 15 clubs across the UK, but made the most appearances for Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday. He has been West Brom U23’s manager since 2020.

STEVEN MACLEAN netted 35 goals in 90 appearances for the Owls. After retiring in 2020, he became a first-team coach with St Johnstone and eventually became their manager. However, he was sacked in October 2023.

MARCUS TUDGAY turned 41 years old in February, but is still playing for Central Midlands League South Division side, South Normanton Athletic.
