Unai Emery shares if there’s one team he wants to win the Champions League this season

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has opened up on whether there’s one team he wants to win the Champions League this season.

The Spaniard will be hoping to be competing with Europe’s elite next season, with his side firmly in control of a top four spot.

Villa are currently six points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, although Ange Postecoglou’s side do hold two games in hand.

But, with Spurs facing an in-form Arsenal on Sunday, there’s every chance of the gap widening this weekend.

Emery is no stranger to success in Europe. He’s become known for his savvy tactics in the latter stages of the Europa League in particular.

His four titles, including three on the spin, in the continent’s second-rate competition is a remarkable feat.

The Champions League is next on the Villa boss’ hit list, and he discussed this year’s competition in a recent interview with BeIN Sports.

On whether he has a preference over who wins, Emery said: “I don’t know. I am watching other matches, trying to analyse when I have to play, but then I want to enjoy. It’s not about which club is my favourite or which club I want to win; I want to enjoy watching those matches, and I want to win with Aston Villa.”

Aston Villa must keep up with Unai Emery’s ambition

Aston Villa have always been ambitious under the stewardship of NSWE, but the introduction of the Spaniard has taken the club forward ten-fold.

He isn’t content with mediocrity. Everything, both on and off the field, has to improve. And if the club fall behind his standards, there’s every chance of him moving on.

Right now, it feels like an excellent fit. The Villa boss wants to compete with the best in Europe and now the Villa Park decision-makers are being dragged along in the same direction.

NSWE must be prepared to step up once again in the summer. If Villa do land a spot in the Champions League, they’re not there to merely take part.
