Despite injuries, Sheffield Wednesday simply have to sign 24-year-old free agent this summer - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday will have a lot to do this summer, whether they stay in the Championship or not.

But a 3-1 win at Blackburn Rovers last time out has left Sheffield Wednesday in 21st place of the Championship table with two games to go.

And all of a sudden, Championship survival is starting to look quite likely for Danny Rohl‘s side, who have all the momentum right now.

But everyone knows the job is far from done.

Two huge games lie ahead for Sheffield Wednesday with the first coming on Saturday; against West Brom in front of a sold-out Hillsborough crowd.

Rohl made some very interesting comments in his Thursday press conference.

He spoke about the summer ahead and how changes need to be made, and if those changes are made, then he and the club can start to think about the next steps.

In a nutshell, it seemed like Rohl was telling owner Dejphon Chansiri that he needs to make certain changes to the club this summer, likely the facilities and whatnot, and then Rohl will commit his longer-term future to Sheffield Wednesday.

And Rohl will surely have an eye on the playing squad.

Even though his future at the club largely remains up in the air, he’ll no doubt be thinking about the state of the first-team squad beyond this season, with a horde of players set to leave in the summer.

One such player is Ian Poveda.

But Rohl or whoever is in charge next time round must do everything in their power to bring him back on a permanent basis.

Sheffield Wednesday are finding a way to cope without Leeds United loan man Poveda.

But that’s not to say that he’s not a huge miss right now.

In eight games that he’s started for Wednesday since arriving on deadline day in February, the Owls have won six and lost two.

And although he only recorded one assist in his 10 appearances, with no goals, his overall contribution to the team and the threat he gave opposition defences was massive.

He gave Sheffield Wednesday that kind of trickery and unexpectedness that they’ve not had in a player in a long time.

Not only that, but he’s a player who can play in numerous positions along the attacking midfield three, making him a dream player for Rohl, who’ll no doubt wish he had a fit and firing Poveda right now.

It remains to be seen whether or not he features again this season.

And that leads him into a contested summer with Leeds United set to release the Colombian international.

Sheffield Wednesday though are already reportedly keen on re-signing Poveda, 24, as a permanent player in the summer, and if Rohl stays and the Owls stay up, it seems like a move that would make a lot of sense for Poveda.

He’s played some of his best football in S6 after what’s been a very tough last few years for him.

Despite his injury troubles, Wednesday shouldn’t hesitate in signing Poveda on a permanent basis this summer.
