'Just doesn't make sense': Jens Lehmann stunned by what's happened to £30m Arsenal player

Arsenal have enjoyed a solid season as they remain in contention for the Premier League title and reached the Champions League quarter-finals.

There’s no doubt that Mikel Arteta has done a great job at Arsenal, turning the Gunners from a shadow of their former selves into one of England’s top teams once again.

Arteta has never shied away from making controversial decisions in his time as Arsenal manager. He has frozen out and offloaded multiple top players and earners over the years.

For the most part, it seems as though most of these calls have been vindicated. However, one relatively recent decision continues to raise eyebrows.

Aaron Ramsdale was first-choice at Arsenal, quickly dethroning Bernd Leno following his £30million move in 2021.

Everything was seemingly ticking along nicely for him, until Arteta signed David Raya and made him first-choice.

The England international has had to make do with sitting on the bench for most of the season, and it seems unlikely that he’ll stick around next term.

Arsenal icon Jens Lehmann has now given his verdict on the situation involving Ramsdale and Raya at the Emirates Stadium.

What has Jens Lehmann said about Arsenal goalkeepers Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya?

Lehmann, who was part of the Invincibles squad of 2003/04, told the Daily Mail: “I never ever understood the Ramsdale decision.

“If you have a good, brave English keeper at a big English club doing well and then you bring in a Spanish guy who’s never played for a big club at that level – it just doesn’t make sense.”

“The keeper is the most important position in the team. If I were Ramsdale, I don’t know how I would react because it’s not easy at that age. When you’re older, it’s different.”

It’s a shame how things have gone for Ramsdale. Nobody can begrudge him if he decides to leave the club, and there will no doubt be a Premier League club that will eagerly take him off the Gunners’ hands.

As for Raya, he has done well for the most part, but he’s still prone to the odd mistake, as we saw against Tottenham at the weekend.

You can’t help but wonder how different things would be if, back in 2020, Arteta opted to stick with Emiliano Martinez and sell Bernd Leno instead.
