'To rewrite history': Lionel Messi now tipped to be a shoo-in to win major MLS award

Taylor Twellman has now tipped Lionel Messi to win a major MLS award later this season with Inter Miami.

The 36-year-old forward has been sensational for the Herons this year, with Messi on top of his game since returning from injury as the Argentine international sits top of both the goalscoring and assist charts in MLS.

Breaking another record on Saturday, Messi’s form since overcoming a hamstring injury in March has been nothing short of incredible, with Inter Miami currently on a three-game winning streak and sitting top of the MLS Supporters’ Shield standings.

And Messi has now been tipped to win one of the biggest awards in MLS.

Twellman says Messi now looks guaranteed to win MLS MVP award

Speaking on MLS’ official YouTube channel, Twellman claimed that Messi looks like a shoo-in to win the MVP award, the biggest accolade a player can win in the division come the end of the year.

Twellman said: “It is getting very difficult for me to quantify with words what it’s like to watch Lionel Messi play in person. For Messi to give the fans what they paid for, and then also to rewrite history. Nine goals, seven assists, in seven games, that’s less than 600 minutes.

“He’s the first player in the league to do so. And the best part is, the Revolution felt like they defended him well! Everyone knows it’s coming, yet they freeze in the moment and in the blink of an eye, the man goes to work.

“But the number that stands out to me more is this: In 24 MLS games he’s had since coming to the league, he’s only lost three times. The consummate professional, the demanding winner and more importantly, the greatest of all time. Can you believe there’s people out there that actually think he’s not MVP of the league to this point? What a clown!”

Messi is showing why Inter Miami went all out to sign him

Given Messi’s popularity and status in the world game, it’s perhaps no real surprise that the forward was already a favorite to win the MVP award in his first full season with Inter Miami.

But given the insane numbers Messi is now putting up with Inter Miami, it’s hard to think of a current player in MLS who even comes close to rivaling the Argentine great for the MVP award this year.

Indeed, if Messi can remain fit and stay on his current goalscoring pace, there’s a real chance that the attacker can break every record in the book in MLS, something Inter Miami will love to see.
