Sony set to stage PlayStation 5 showcase

Sony has announced plans to stage a PlayStation 5 showcase on Wednesday (16.09.20).

The much-anticipated console is set to be released later this year and the tech giant has confirmed that the upcoming event - which is being staged at 9pm BST - will focus on new games.

The showcase will be broadcast on Twitch and YouTube, and will last for around 40 minutes.

Sony will hope that it'll encourage gamers to buy one of the new PlayStation consoles when it goes on sale later this year.

However, as things stand, the company hasn't confirmed a price or a release date for the PlayStation 5.

Last month, Eric Lampel - Sony Interactive Entertainment's senior vice president and head of global marketing - insisted the PlayStation 5 "will launch this year" without delays.

He admitted the coronavirus pandemic has presented a number of challenges to the company as it prepares to release the new console, but he doesn't think it will impact Sony's plans.

He said: "It's a massive challenge on every front.

"Not just for the parts of the organisation that I oversee, but for all parts of the organisation. The nice thing is that we're pulling it together.

"We will launch this year - that will happen - and from my end we will absolutely make sure that we will bring all of the magic and all of the excitement of launches that we have had in the past."
