Leicester City could still break a Championship record this season

Leicester City are within touching distance of making an instant return back to the Premier League.

It’s been a rocky couple of months for The Foxes but they looked back to the very best against Southampton, securing a thumping 5-0 victory to move four points clear at the summit.

Abdul Fatawu netted a hat-trick and was virtually unplayable at times against one of the best fullbacks in the division, Kyle Walker-Peters.

Enzo Maresca‘s side will secure promotion with a win on Monday evening when they travel to Preston North End, or if Queens Park Rangers defeat second-placed Leeds United on Friday.

They also still have the chance to break a Championship record in the remaining two games of the season.

Leicester City could break their own Championship record

It’s recently emerged, that if Leicester win their final two games, they will become the first team since the turn of the century to win 32 in a single Championship season.

The current record is 31, set by Manchester City, The Foxes and Reading, as per playmakerstats.

Nigel Pearson’s title-winning side in 2013/14 amassed 31 wins and a whopping 102 points and whilst the current City team can’t surpass or equal that, they can one-up them for victories.

Maresca’s men will just be focused on winning one of their last two, though, as that would seal their return to the top flight.

Notwithstanding that, Preston and Blackburn Rovers are both very winnable games, so if his side hit top gear, they’re more than capable of breaking the record and creating history.

Leicester City could still amass 100 points

At one point, many thought Leicester were going to break Reading’s record points total of 106.

Up until February, they’d only lost four games all season and were projected to surpass that tally.

That, however, isn’t possible now after an inconsistent run of form since suffering a 2-1 defeat to Middlesbrough.

Though, they can still break the triple-figure mark by beating Preston and Blackburn.

If that does happen, City will become only the seventh team to amass 100 points in the Championship and the first club to do it twice.

History could await the East Midlanders in the coming weeks.
