'Outstanding' 21-year-old would've been better off signing for Leicester City when he had the chance - opinion

Leicester City are on the verge of booking an instant return back to the Premier League.

Enzo Maresca‘s side have had their wobble but now look well-placed to go up as champions and are just one win away from sealing a top-two finish.

The East Midlanders thrashed Southampton 5-0 at King Power Stadium on Tuesday evening to extend their lead at the summit.

Since arriving from Manchester City last summer, Maresca has improved a number of players who weren’t performing under the previous regime.

With that said, it makes you wonder if this ‘outstanding’ 21-year-old would’ve been better off signing for City when he had the chance.

James McAtee should’ve signed for Leicester City instead of Sheffield United

Leicester tried to sign Manchester City’s James McAtee last summer and even had him at Seagrave training ground just before the transfer window slammed shut.

Ultimately, he completed a last-minute loan move to Sheffield United following a productive year there the previous campaign.

At the time, a move to The Blades seemed the obvious choice for McAtee, with City residing a division below.

However, as the season has panned out, perhaps he should’ve joined The Foxes instead and worked under the stewardship of Maresca.

The Italian head coach has implemented a similar style of play to that of Manchester City, so McAtee would’ve been better prepared to transition back to Pep Guardiola’s squad at the end of the loan spell.

Further, as previously alluded to, Maresca has improved a number of players at Leicester and polished areas of their game, both on and off the ball.

The East Midlanders are on the verge of taking Sheffield United’s place in the Premier League, too, so with all that said, McAtee must be regretting his decision.

Leicester City should go back in for James McAtee

Leicester should go back in for McAtee’s signature this summer, anyhow.

The 2002-born has been United’s shining light in what has been a pretty glum campaign, so Jon Rudkin should launch a loan proposal when his deal at Bramall Lane expires.

With The Foxes still at risk of breaching Profit and Sustainability rules this year, they need to be clever and shrewd in the market and McAtee would be a pretty risk-averse addition, considering the club would only need to cover his wages.
