Critics fear it jeopardizes democratic freedoms and EU aspirations, requiring media and NGOs to register if over 20% of funding is foreign. The government argues it combats harmful foreign influence and prevents destabilization. Opposition labels it "the Russian law," akin to Moscow's crackdown on dissent. Mass protests grip the nation, echoing last year's pressure on a similar bill. Renewed demonstrations prompt police clashes with tear gas and water cannons. President Zourabichvili vows veto, but ruling party's majority could override it.

This week, we are joined by Olena Abramovych, Brussels correspondent for Ukrainian TV, Ricardo Borges de Castro, analyst in European and global affairs and Polish journalist Dorota Bawolek. Panelists reflect on the big bang enlargement of the European Union that took place 20 years ago when leaders of 10 new countries presented their flags to Pat Cox, then president of the European Parliament. Despite the bumps along the way, the panel agreed it was a success. "Even though you can say that the story has not always be rosy, over the past 20 years it has been a great story", Ricardo Borges de Ca...

Thousands of Georgians have protested in their country's capital over government efforts to pass a law that imitates repressive policy enacted by the Kremlin. The law calls for media and non-commercial organisations to register as being under foreign influence if they receive more than 20% of their budget from abroad. It is identical to a proposal Georgian Dream was pressured to withdraw a year ago following large street protests. The only change is the rec...

The UK government is seeking to curb foreign state influence over the country's media following a United Arab Emirates-backed investment firm's attempt to take over two national publications. During a debate in the House of Lords on Wednesday evening, media minister Stephen Parkinson said the government would propose an amendment to the "Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill" currently making its way through Parliament. The amendment would prevent foreign state ownership of newspapers and news magazines, although it would still need to be approved in the House of Lords and the House ...

The Media Freedom Act - first proposed by the EU executive in September 2022 - was overwhelmingly adopted on Wednesday with 464 votes in favour, 92 against and 65 abstentions. The Act will oblige EU governments to better protect media against malign interference and limit the use of spyware against journalists. A bespoke EU body, called the European Board for Media Services, will be established to oversee the implementation of the laws. Widespread disinformation, lack of transparency on...
