Nottingham Forest have now made another controversial decision that could come back to bite them - opinion

Nottingham Forest might have just made another unpopular decision behind the scenes – and this one could come back to bite the club.

The Reds are facing profitability and sustainability charges – and Forest could discover their punishment this week.

Now,Forest have shown their hand after Premier League clubs were tasked with making another vote, this time over a settlement with the EFL.

Nottingham Forest vote against new EFL settlement

This news comes courtesy of theDaily Mail and they’ve shared the 10 clubs to reject the new EFL settlement.

It probably won’t come as a surprise that Forest are among the clubs not willing to agree to the terms of this new settlement.

Furthermore, it’s claimed that the 10 parties who have rejected the idea will consider legal action should a government regulator force them to pay.

Forest could be about to shoot themselves firmly in the foot with this one, however.

In our view, it’s pretty disgusting how much the money in football differs in the Premier League to the EFL – and something has to give.

It’s been claimed that insiders believe that the prospect of a business being forced to pay a rival business in the same industry – with the money then used by the rival to try and take their place in the Premier League – isn’t fit for purpose.

Although there is some sense in that, everyone is acutely aware that football isn’t like any other business.

The numbers proposed would see EFL clubs paid £836 million over five years and they’d come on top of the existing £110 million in solidarity payments and development funding.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has previously warned of a government intervention if an agreement can’t be reached.

Forest could rue this decision

Well, on the one hand, it’s good that Forest haven’t agreed to something proposed by the Premier League’s chief Richard Masters.

The man who called Forest and Everton ‘small clubs’ probably doesn’t deserve the snot from Evangelos Marinakis’ nose.

With that said, this one does feel a little controversial and Forest have to be careful.

Where the problem lies for Forest comes in the sense that they might not be in the Premier League beyond this season.

The nine other clubs – with the exception of Crystal Palace – are all pretty much guaranteed another campaign playing in the Premier League.

Forest could soon be back in the EFL and at that point, the club might wish they’d been a little more accommodating to this idea.

In an ideal world, if Forest do go down, they would come straight back up – much like Leicester and Leeds have tried to do this season.

However, there is no guarantee of this and the last time the Reds departed the Premier League, they waited 23 years to get back.

Only time will tell just how costly this decision is and the hope will be that it doesn’t royally backfire on Forest.
