'I certainly know': Michael Dawson issues Evangelos Marinakis claim from Forest live on Sky Sports

Michael Dawson has said Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was not expecting a relegation battle this season.

It has been a season which Forest will want to forget as they find themselves battling at the wrong end of the table.

Their draw on Saturday away to Luton Town hasn’t changed much at the bottom end, but an opportunity to take points of a rival has passed.

Dawson issues Marinakis claim

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men had to settle for a point at Kenilworth Road on Saturday having taken the lead.

Chris Wood provided the visitors the lead inside the first half, however, maximum points were let slip when Luke Berry equalised in the last minutes of the game.

Forest still remain three points clear of the drop, but they are still at risk of receiving a points deduction from the Premier League.

Speaking on Sky Sports prior to the game this afternoon, Dawson claimed the Forest owner was expecting a lot more after the money which had been spent.

He said: “The owner didn’t see them being in this position. One, with a points deduction hanging over them, but I certainly know he wasn’t expecting a relegation battle with the money they’ve spent.

“But it just shows how hard the Premier League is. I always said when they got promoted, try and stay in there for a few years and try to establish yourself. Don’t think you’re a top 10 side for a long, long time.”

Nottingham Forest transfers 23/24

Forest have spent massively since their promotion to the Premier League just a couple of years ago.

They even broke the record for the most players signed during one transfer window in the summer of 2022.

Over £160m was spent across both transfer windows that season.

And yet, Forest find themselves still mixing with the sides fighting relegation this term.

In comparison to the likes of Luton, the money spent is staggering and there has clearly not been much of a return on investment for the Forest owner.

A huge opportunity to open up a bigger gap on the drop zone passed Espirito Santo’s side on the weekend, but they could have ended the weekend inside the bottom three.

If Forest do manage to retain their Premier League status this season, there has to be some questions asked of why the money being spent is not being replicated by the results on the pitch.
