Netflix fans urged to stop searching for 'real life stalker' who ruined comedian's life for years

Baby Reindeer is the latest craze on Netflix, based on a real-life story of a comedian dealing with a female stalker, to put it lightly. However, Richard Gadd, who plays the lead based on his own experiences, has begged fans to ‘stop searching’ for the real-life Martha Baby Reindeer is about.

We’re all guilty of it, finishing a riveting series on Netflix and heading straight to Google to see what the cast are up to now. However, with this series, fans were desperate to find out who the real-life stalker, named Marta Scott, in the series, is. Names and specific dates have been changed in the TV show. This is to protect the identities of those involved, but it doesn’t stop fans speculating.

Baby Reindeer star Richard Gadd asks people ‘to stop searching’ for stalker – due to false allegations

The drama, rightly so, has done extremely well on the streaming service, making its way to the global top 10. However, more viewers mean more conspiracy theories, ‘forcing’ Gadd to speak out.

Gadd, who plays the character Donny Dunn, based on himself, took to his Instagram to urge fans to stop. He wrote: “People I love, have worked with, and admire (including Sean Foley) are unfairly getting caught up in speculation. Please don’t speculate on who any of the real-life people could be. That’s not the point of our show.”

As well as stalker, Martha Scott, Dunn is also abused by a TV writer, Darrien, played by Tom Goodman-Hill. Some are unfairly speculating to be British writer, Sean Foley. There is no truth behind these accusations. Gadd specifically mentioned him as being “unfairly caught up in speculation”.

Responding to the false speculations on X, formerly known as Twitter, Foley wrote: “Police have been informed and are investigating all defamatory abusive and threatening posts against me.”

As for stalker, Martha Scott, played by Jessica Gunning, fans have been trawling the internet trying to find traces of the dangerous serial stalker from recordings of Gadd’s real-life comedy shows.

In a specific TikTok video, fans are convinced they can hear the stalker’s ‘infectious laugh’. It is heard and mentioned many times throughout the series.

The real-life stalker is said to have sent Gadd more than 41,000 emails, 350 hours of voicemail, 744 tweets, 46 Facebook messages, and 106 pages of letters.

However, Richard has expressed that his stalker was also ‘a victim,’ someone in serious need of mental health support.

Jessica Gunning brands the ‘searching’ a ‘real shame’

As well as Gadd, Jessica Gunning, who plays stalker Martha in the series has also spoken out about the constant speculation of the real-life stalker.

“I didn’t know that was happening. I would urge people not to be doing that,” the 38-year-old told Glamour when asked how she felt about the situation.

She added: “I think it’s a real, real shame because it shows that they haven’t watched the show properly. That’s not the point of it in any way.

“Netflix and Richard [Gadd] went to extreme lengths to try and make sure that the identities were kept private for a reason,” the star continued.

Gunning then went on to encourage viewers to “watch the show again” to see what “the point of it really was – it definitely wasn’t that,” she explained.

“I deliberately didn’t want to do an impersonation of somebody, I wanted to do an interpretation of this character,” the star concluded.
