'Remarkable': Pundit explains 'one thing' Sheffield Wednesday 'have in their favour' in relegation scrap

Ally McCoist has claimed that Sheffield Wednesday have one key thing ‘in their favour’ in their bid for survival.

Sheffield Wednesday have spent the entirety of the 2023/24 season in a relegation battle, having found themselves already seven points from safety when Xisco Munoz was sacked.

Danny Rohl has only been at the club for six months but has been one of the Championship’s best managers this term, finally helping the Owls crawl out of the bottom three at the weekend.

Despite winning 13 games under the German, Wednesday had looked increasingly likely to drop back down to League One as they struggled to climb out of the relegation zone.

However, a plucky 3-1 win over Blackburn Rovers on Sunday has seen them finally move into safety for the first time since the opening day.

The Owls now have two games left, and as they sit only a single point above Birmingham, the relegation battle is guaranteed to go down to the final day of the campaign.

Rohl’s side could well need two wins from two to guarantee safety, which could be a huge challenge against West Brom and Sunderland.

Sheffield Wednesday’s big advantage in the relegation scrap

Despite that, former striker Ally McCoist believes they have one huge advantage at the bottom of the Championship.

Speaking to Football League World, McCoist said: “What a story that is at Sheffield Wednesday!

“They brought Danny Rohl in and he’s been absolutely remarkable.

“I think I speak on behalf of a lot of football fans when I say I didn’t know much about Danny Rohl, but he’s absolutely transformed the club.

“He’s instilled some belief into the Sheffield Wednesday players.

“The one thing they have in their favour now is momentum, they’re unbeaten in four with a brilliant win against Blackburn, not only are they picking up points but they’re picking up points against teams who are trying to suck them back into the bottom three.

“If I was a betting man, I’d fancy them to stay up!

“They’ve got West Brom at home and Sunderland away which aren’t easy fixtures, but when they’re must win games, they can find enough to get over the line and stay up.”

Relegation candidates’ form compared

Sheffield Wednesday are now unbeaten in four games and have claimed eight points from a possible 12.

Meanwhile, Birmingham have taken two wins from their previous 12 games, and Huddersfield Town have one won of their last 10.

The Owls’ form means they could even keep climbing further up the table if they can win their final two matches, with 17th place only three points away.

That will be far from Rohl’s focus though, because their survival is now completely in their hands, and as long as they finish out of the relegation zone, fans won’t be too fussed about their final position.
